Dear Camp Staff Alum,

Keep up to date on Camp Staff Alumni news.  Please forward this email to fellow former staffers who would like to subscribe.  In this email, you will find some great opportunities to help give back to Boston Minuteman Council scouting and the camp programs that influenced so many, by supporting programs that currently benefit knowledge and leadership skills among hundreds of scouts.

Alumni Reunion: Register Today!

The Alumni Weekend planned for August 2-3 is fast approaching, and we hope to see you there.  Staff alumni from any scout camp are welcome to participate.  Check-in will be at the dining hall starting at 9 AM Saturday morning.  A separate announcement describes the event details, schedule, and payment.  Have questions?  Contact: tonymorganelli@comcast.net (781-223-5999) or dominic.ilacqua@gmail.com.

Please help get the word out by calling former camp staff from Boston or Minuteman councils.  Program areas will be open, and there will be a lobster and steak banquet Saturday evening followed by a campfire.  Camp sites will be available for overnight stay, and families are welcome.

Gerry Boyle, former Camp Director at Adams Pond and a former Parker Mountain staff member, is the alumnus being honored at the banquet.  Gerry had a career in the Marine Corps, is the Presiding Justice in the Concord NH district court, and remains actively involved in Scouting.

We hope to see staff alumni from every decade in attendance.  Tour the camp and meet the current staff.  We soon hope to say to you: “Welcome home!

Field Trip to Parker Mountain

There will be a field trip to Parker Mountain offered Sunday morning August 3 at the conclusion of the Alumni Reunion Weekend.   All are welcome, especially former Parker Mountain staff.  Gather at the dining hall at Storer Reservation at 9:00 AM for a timely departure.

Parker Mountain Scout Camp was the primary camp of Minuteman Council and operated for decades starting about 1948.  Many staff members from Parker Mountain also worked at Storer Reservation; numerous staff shifted to Storer Reservation in the late 1960s and early 1970s when Tony Toto moved to Boston Council from Minuteman Council.

With the merger of Boston and Minuteman councils, Parker Mountain eventually ceased to operate as a summer scout camp but it continues to be owned by Boston Minuteman Council and is used for off-season troop camping.  It currently is leased as a summer creative arts camp called Camp Beam.

Many former staff members have not been to Parker Mountain in decades, and the Alumni Weekend will be an opportunity to revisit great memories there.  Take advantage of this opportunity to see the Willey ponds, remember the Hilltop and Sleepy Hollow staff areas, see former campsites such as Mohawk and Apache, and walk the roads and trails.

Alumni meet and work with 2014 Staff

The 2014 camp season is underway at Storer Reservation.  Staff alumni had the opportunity to meet and work with the 2014 staff on June 28, sharing skills by improving campsites for incoming troops.  Tent platforms were distributed, leveled, and prepared for the raising of canvass throughout the camp.

We wish the 2014 camp staff much success as they deliver great programs and continue the legacy of commitment by camp staff spanning more than 60 years.

The concept of a Camp Staff Alumni Association began late summer 2007 and, since that time, more than 200 alumni have joined the Association. The beginning years involved defining the organization, establishing roles and responsibilities, having successful projects and reunions, and setting up the website and financial management. Most importantly, it involved building a positive and credible relationship with Boston Minuteman Council and the current camp staff. Together, we did it!
Please do not hesitate to contact a Board member to share ideas and suggestions, volunteer, or make a donation. Board members include Bruce Colvin (chairman), Nick Cortese (Council interface), Dom Ilacqua (membership), John Collins (Website), Lee Vergnani (Treasurer), Tony Morganelli (Reunion Committee), Greg Boyd (Projects).  Board members also include the alumni Scoutmaster representing each decade, and volunteers for that role are needed. See the alumni website for details.

Get involved in some way. Think about the Alumni Association motto:

“We will give back to camp more than camp gave to us.”

Sincerely,
